"PBS." Jazz timeline. N.p., 2005. Web. 4 Jun 2012. <http://pbskids.org/jazz/index.html>.
  • I used this source as an example timeline and for basic information about jazz. I also put some of the pictures in the presentation. This was mostly used on the "What is Jazz?" page.
Seago, Lynne. Constructing the Past. History Department at Digital Commons, 2000. 0. <http://digitalcommons.iwu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1069&context=constructing>.
  • I read this online book excerpt to learn about the effects of jazz on segregation and discrimination. This gave me a basis of knowledge for the project and gave me some ideas. This was the first source I used and helped my group think of an argument.
West Jason, W.J. "What is Jazz? ." All about jazz. All about jazz, 2012. Web. 4 Jun 2012. <http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=15802>.
  • This article informed me that jazz is a very subjective subject although it has an objective start to it. It also helped me create the timeline as it summarized what happened from 1920-1960.

How did I contribute to the project as a whole?

I contributed to the project by creating the website, adding all photos, videos, and other types of media to the presentation, laying everything out onto each page, and creating the “What is Jazz?” page. For that page, I had to define jazz and explain the history of it without really using my direct opinion. I chose to do this in a timeline format. Before I began creating the website, I had to learn all about how to create new pages, insert gadgets like videos, pictures, and songs, and basically how to create a website. It was very difficult to format all of the text and information into an attractive, effective, and informative formation. I did a lot of research before working on my assigned page of the project. I was in charge of the design of the whole thing and piecing it all together.

    • This site helped me learn about the cabaret card and how it limited the actions of many African-Americans who were professionals in the field of entertainment. I learned about how they got their card revoked and what they had to go through when they didn’t have a cabaret card.

Harker, Brian. Jazz an American Journey. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Education Inc. 2005.

    • I used this book to learn most of the history of Jazz. It taught me about the origin of jazz, the early stages of Jazz. How white people reacted to black people playing Jazz music and about postmodern Jazz.

Hentoff, Nat. “How Jazz Helped Hasten the Civil-Rights Movement.” The Wall Street Journal| Arts & Entertainment. Friday, January 16, 2009 As of 12:00 AM. June 3, 2012. <http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123197292128083217.html

    • This site mainly taught me about segregation when it came to black Jazz bands performing on stage. It also taught me about how much worse the segregation was in the south than in the north, even though the north was still bad.

How did I contribute to the project as a whole?

When it came to doing this project, my job was to find out how Jazz and segregation went hand in hand together. It was my responsibility to find out how people discriminated against black Jazz bands in the north and in the south. I had to find out the different ways people would treat black Jazz artists. I also had to find out some of the few places that black Jazz musicians were able to perform at. In addition to that I had to learn about the cabaret card and explain how without the card, Jazz artists could not play at certain clubs. I had to do a lot of research in order to complete my assigned page on the website. Some topics were harder to research than others but I was able to finish my portion.

How did I contribute to the project as a whole?

I contributed by looking up talented music artists, ones that most people don’t know but helped contribute to the rise of jazz. This was great for me because all I knew about was the famous names duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong this gave me a chance to learn more about jazz and more about music artist’ and their stories. Also I contributed to some ideas and thoughts about our main argument.
